Hello! Thanks to everyone who played along last week! There were so many fabulous entries.. I had fun taking a peek at everyone's creations!
It's time for another Play Date Cafe challenge. Julie has chosen the inspiration photos above and the colors Light Pink, Light Grey, Black and White this week.
Please welcome our Celebrity Guest Designer, Ashley Cannon Newell!
When I first saw these colors, I immediately thought of Breast Cancer Awareness. Although October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, cancer doesn't isolate itself to appear only during a particular week or even month. It just appears unannounced, unwanted, whenever we least expect it. I made this for a dear sweet friend, whose mom was just diagnosed with cancer. I'm just so heartbroken for their family and the unknown that lies ahead. I know she is scared for her mom but wants to be strong for her as well. They are in my thoughts and prayers... I know it isn't much, but I wanted to do something for her to let her know that I am here anytime she needs me. Instead of just making her a card, I made a little framed item that she can display (or give to her mom). Here's a look at the entire frame:
To give you an idea of the size, this is a frame that originally had openings for two 4" x 6" photos. I carefully cut the mat on both sides to create one 6" x 8 1/4" opening. A few months ago, I had picked up some Think Pink Making Memories paper that I thought would come in handy for cancer awareness fundraiser projects. These colors work perfectly for the color challenge and for what I wanted to create. The stamp I used is from Cornish Heritage Farms -- Cancer is so Limited. Here's a close-up of the words:
I removed the glass from the frame so that I could add all of my embellishments. A few week's ago, my SIL, Mary, sent me a package full of some pretty lace and handmade crochet flowers.. they were just perfect for this! I added some stitching, rhinestone florishes and pearls to the center of each flower. I also added some dyed seam binding ribbon, tied a few bows, added a black button (with pearl) and a couple of heart-shaped trinket pins. Here's a detail shot of the embellishments:
